Wood Veneer Consulting for Special Projects
Your architectural vision. The right wood choices to bring it to life.
An entrance hall that sets the tone. Wall panels whose grain carries on with elegance. Doors, furniture and wood details that make up a harmonious whole.
The success of a veneer project is decided long before manufacturing. With Placages X Press, benefit from specialized guidance to turn your design intentions into material choices that are consistent, achievable and suited to your budget.

01 — Over 25 years of experience in service of your decisions
Every species has its own character. Every cut reveals a different pattern. Every application has its own demands.
Our role is to help you connect these elements: the intended result, the veneer selection, the manufacturing constraints and the real needs of the project.
We work with architects, designers, cabinetmakers and project teams on the decisions that make the difference between a beautiful material and a successful interior.
02 — An expert eye on the decisive points
Choosing the species, cut and grade
Intended characterDefine the intended character, compare the options and set selection criteria based on visible surfaces, applications and aesthetic expectations.
More than a hundred species, in sliced, rotary, rift or quarter cut. See the guides to veneer grades and to cutting and matching.
Defining matches and sequences
Sequence and grainChoose a book match, a slip match or a special pattern. Plan the grain direction and the continuity between pieces from the design stage.
Panels sequence-matched or made to your drawings. See the veneer matching guide and the architectural wood panels.
Selecting the right substrates
SubstratesReview panel options, thicknesses and constructions for the intended use. For special needs, study FR and MR substrates and solutions for curved work.
MDF, particleboard, plywood, HDF, Fibrex, Cora Perform, marine plywood; NuGreen (VOC-free), fire rated (FR) and moisture resistant (MR) options; flexible veneer for curves.
Assessing feasibility and sourcing
FeasibilityIdentify limits on dimensions, availability and yield. Compare solutions that respect the intended effect while taking budget and schedule into account.
Panels up to 5 × 12 ft, depending on veneer availability; rare or uncommon species through our supplier network.
Anticipating manufacturing and finishing difficulties
ManufacturingReview the sensitive points of bonding, pressing, sanding and finishing. Plan the relevant samples and trials before committing to production.
Blistering, substrate telegraphing, joints that show after varnish, warping: find the cause before it gets expensive.
03 — One intention, from the first panel to the last detail
When several pieces of woodwork sit side by side, their harmony deserves special attention. Colour, figure, grain direction and sequences must be thought through together.
We help you define a guiding line to coordinate wall panels, doors, frames, built-in furniture and edge banding. When a project combines veneer and solid wood, we also look at matching possibilities to aim for convincing visual continuity, while allowing for the natural variations of wood.
The goal: to preserve the designer's intent through every material choice.
04 — Experience built on demanding projects
Founded in 2005, Placages X Press has taken part in projects where veneer quality and attention to detail are central. Among our projects: Deloitte, Holt Renfrew, Caisse Desjardins, the Montréal Canadiens training centre, Montréal City Hall, Maison Simons, Harry Rosen and the restaurant Européa.

This experience feeds a practical approach: understand the intended effect, ask the right questions and propose choices suited to manufacturing realities. See all projects.
05 — A collaboration tailored to your project
Do you have an idea to validate, a selection of materials to refine or a technical difficulty to solve? Consulting can take the form of a focused opinion or multi-stage support. The engagement is defined according to your needs, your documents and the progress of the project.
Focused opinion
One precise questionValidating an idea, refining a selection of materials or solving a technical difficulty.
Multi-stage support
From concept to manufacturingProjects that bring together several pieces of woodwork or several phases, with decisions followed at each stage.
- 1You send us your documents
Plans, inspiration photos, available samples or your main questions.
- 2We identify the issues with you
A first conversation is enough to agree on the right level of involvement.
- 3You move forward with precise criteria
And if you wish, we can manufacture or supply the project's panels, veneers and doors.
06 — Frequently asked questions
What should I prepare before the first conversation?
A short description of the project, your plans or drawings (PDF, DWG or DXF), inspiration photos, any samples you have, the species you have in mind if any, and the schedule. The more precise, the more useful the conversation; but a project that is still just an idea is welcome too.
Do you also offer training for my team?
Yes. The seminar “Wood Veneers: From the Tree to the Sheet” is given at your facilities over a 7 to 8 hour day (or two half-days), with a 75-page workbook for every participant. See the seminar program.
