Finishing Problems: A Diagnostic Preview

01

Visible veneer joints after varnishing

Cause

The varnish swells the fibers on either side of the joint, making the seam visible.

Solution

Cross-sanding G150–G220, applying a pore filler before varnishing, or using a hardening sealer.

Telegraphing effect

!
Cause

Substrate irregularities (MDF, particleboard) show through the thin veneer after gluing.

Solution

Check substrate flatness before gluing, use a veneer of sufficient thickness (min. 0.6 mm), apply a hardening sealer.

Unfilled open pores

!
Cause

Large-pored species (oak, ash, wenge) leave craters after varnishing.

Solution

Apply a pore filler, sand between coats G320–G400, repeat until the surface is closed.

Grain raising

!
Cause

Fibers stand up after the first coat of water-based varnish or stain.

Solution

Lightly dampen the panel with water, let dry, sand G220–G280 before applying the final finish.

Visible putty marks

!
Cause

Repair putty absorbs stain or varnish differently.

Solution

Use a compatible stainable putty, apply stain before puttying, or choose a non-porous putty for clear finishes.
